Of course, the dream is to have both. But what if you could only choose one? Which would it be?

As I navigate the unpredictable waters of full-time freelance life, I keep revisiting a conversation I had with a fellow freelancer a few weeks ago. We found ourselves deeply immersed in the classic debate: security or freedom.

It’s a question that strikes a chord with many of us—especially those who’ve chosen to step away from the conventional 9-to-5 grind and embrace the uncertain but exhilarating life of a creative freelancer, artist, performer or actor.

Of course, the dream is to have both. Who wouldn’t want the best of both worlds? But what if you could only choose one? Which would it be?

A New Kind of Freedom: Embracing the Unpredictable

For the first time in my career, I’m experiencing a level of freedom I never knew was possible. Sure, I have less financial security—there’s no consistent paycheck or steady stream of gigs to count on. But the trade-off has been remarkable. I’ve noticed a shift within myself. I’m more curious about the world around me. I’m waking up earlier, fueled by excitement and a renewed sense of purpose. I’m doing things simply because they bring me joy, not because they fit into someone else’s schedule or vision.

The Comfort of Security: Stability in an Unstable World

On the other hand, security offers stability—a luxury that can be incredibly tempting, especially in an industry as unpredictable as ours. Security means knowing the bills will be paid, that there’s a routine to lean on, and perhaps even a safety net for the unexpected. It allows us to plan for the future with a bit more confidence, to focus on our craft without the constant worry of financial instability. But for many of us, that stability can start to feel like a trap, slowly stifling the very creativity that brought us into this industry in the first place.

Choosing Freedom: The Thrills and Challenges of Freelance Life

So, what happens when you choose freedom over security? For me, it’s meant embracing a level of uncertainty that’s both daunting and exhilarating. It’s meant redefining success—not as a steady climb up a predetermined ladder, but as a journey filled with unexpected twists, turns, and moments of pure, unfiltered creativity. It’s meant finding joy in the small, seemingly insignificant moments that make life as a freelancer or actor so uniquely rewarding.

Finding Balance: When Security and Freedom Coexist in a Creative Career

But here’s the catch: the choice between security and freedom isn’t always black and white. Sometimes, life allows us to have both, even if in different measures and at different times. The pendulum swings between the two, and that’s perfectly okay. What’s important is recognising where you are right now and what you need most in this moment of your journey.

Your Path Forward: What Ignites Your Passion as a Freelancer?

For me, at this point in my life and career, freedom is winning. It’s the freedom to explore making new work, to take on projects that truly resonate with me, and to wake up every day with a sense of possibility rather than predictability. It’s the freedom to build a career that reflects not just what I do, but who I am. And while it comes with its own set of challenges, it’s a choice I’m embracing with open arms.
